Scaffolding in Grays and Thurrock

RM16, RM17, RM18, RM19, RM20 (Grays, Chafford Hundred, West Thurrock, Tilbury, Purfleet)

Twincliff puts up scaffolding in Grays, Chafford Hundred, West Thurrock, Stifford Clays, Little Thurrock and Socketts Heath, and along the river to Tilbury and Purfleet: RM16 to RM20. A Southend-on-Sea firm, run by a family that has scaffolded in Essex for 40 years, along the A13. The person who surveys your job prices it. Our own crew erects it and tags it.

Grays' housing, from a scaffolder's side

Grays grew on chalk quarrying and the river. Terraces of workers' cottages went up on Orsett Road, London Road and Argent Street by the 1840s, and most of what was built between 1876 and 1914 was artisans' terraces, still standing on Clarence Road and the streets around the station. After 1918 came the middle-class houses off Bradleigh Avenue and Lodge Lane and the Grays Hall council estate. Out towards Socketts Heath, Little Thurrock and Stifford Clays the stock is inter-war and post-war semis with room to extend.

Then there is Chafford Hundred.

Chafford Hundred and the newer estates

Chafford Hundred was built from 1989 on 600 acres north-west of the town centre, two-thirds of it a former chalk quarry, with its own station opening in 1995. Around 5,600 houses and flats have gone up since, in two-, three- and four-bedroom types. Those houses are now thirty years old and the work has started: re-roofs on the first generation of concrete tiles, rear extensions, garage conversions with a room over, and lofts where the trusses allow. Estate roads are narrow, closes are tight, and the houses sit close together, so where the lorry stands and where materials land is agreed before the crew arrives. See extension and new build scaffolding.

Victorian terraces around the town centre

The late-Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Grays have bay fronts, slate roofs and rear outriggers, with no rear access except through the house. A front lift sits on a short forecourt or on the pavement. The rear outrigger needs its own lift or a hop-up, and a re-roof on the main roof and the outrigger together needs edge protection on both. Party chimney stacks get a chimney stack scaffold off the roof. See roofing scaffolding and domestic scaffolding if your builder has told you to sort the scaffold.

West Thurrock

West Thurrock is Lakeside, the warehouses along the river and the housing squeezed between them. Jobs here are more often commercial in character: a unit being re-clad, a parade of shops being rendered, a small block of flats being re-roofed. We do small sites and small blocks, not high-rise. The riverside is exposed and the wind off the Thames is a factor in sheeting and ties.

Thurrock Council

Thurrock is a unitary authority. There is no Essex County Council layer for planning or highways here, so a scaffold on or over the public highway is licensed by Thurrock Council's own network management team in Grays, not by Essex Highways. Grays has no conservation area; Thurrock's seven, on the council's list, are Corringham, East Tilbury, Fobbing, Horndon on the Hill, Orsett, Purfleet and West Tilbury. What matters more on a Grays terrace is the pavement footprint and the parking, and we plan both at the survey.

Tilbury and Purfleet

Tilbury (RM18) grew up round the docks, and its housing is the terraces and later council estates built for the people who worked there, with Tilbury Town station on the c2c line. Purfleet (RM19), renamed Purfleet-on-Thames in 2020, sits between the A13 and the river inside the M25, with an older core in the Purfleet conservation area and newer housing going up under the Thames Gateway regeneration. Both are river towns: the wind off the Thames is a factor in sheeting and ties, the terraced streets are tight for a lorry, and the newer estates are agreed for access and materials before the day, as at Chafford Hundred.

Access

Town-centre streets are tight, parked up and busy. Chafford Hundred's closes have nowhere to stand a lorry for long. In both cases we agree the delivery slot and where the materials go before the day.

We cover Upminster and Rainham to the north-west and Basildon to the north-east. South Ockendon is covered too. See all areas, or request a survey.
